Novak Djokovic to play Wimbledon but only if he feels he can challenge for the title

Novak Djokovic is on the mend after undergoing minor knee surgery in early June, but his participation in the upcoming Wimbledon Championships remains up in the air. The 37-year-old tennis legend is aiming to return to top form, but only if he feels confident enough to challenge for the title.

Djokovic's road to Wimbledon has been fraught with challenges. A right knee injury sustained during his French Open victory forced him to withdraw from the quarter-finals. This not only threatened his Wimbledon dreams but also cast doubt on his participation in the Paris Olympics.

However, there is a glimmer of hope. Earlier this month, Djokovic secured his spot at the Olympics, and last week, he fueled optimism by posting videos on Instagram showcasing his return to training. This positive development was followed by his arrival at the All England Club on Sunday, where he immediately intensified his preparations.

Despite the encouraging signs, Djokovic remains cautious. In a BBC interview after Monday's practice session, he made it clear that a symbolic appearance at Wimbledon is not on his agenda. "I didn't come here to play a few rounds," he declared. "If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I'll play. If not, then I'll give somebody else a chance to play."

The rehabilitation process appears to be progressing well. Djokovic reported daily improvements, each day bringing him a "few percent better" closer to peak condition. This positive trajectory fuels his determination to keep pushing forward.

"I'm taking things gradually," he explained. "I'm not pushing myself yet 100% but I'm hoping that's going to come in the next few days."

This cautious optimism is understandable. The Serbian champion is hungry for titles. Having secured three out of the four Grand Slams in 2023, he is determined to extend his record-breaking Grand Slam tally to a staggering 25 trophies. His sole Grand Slam defeat in 2023 came at the hands of rising star Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set Wimbledon final.
