The legendary Spanish point guard officially called it a career after 21 years of professional basketball

Sergio Rodriguez, affectionately known as "El Chacho" by fans, has called time on his remarkable 21-year basketball career. The 38-year-old Spanish point guard made the announcement on Instagram just weeks after hoisting the ACB championship trophy with Real Madrid, his final act a fitting culmination of a trophy-laden journey.

Rodriguez's legacy will forever be intertwined with Real Madrid, where he enjoyed two separate stints (2010-2016 and 2022-2023). During his time with Los Blancos, he established himself as a club legend, collecting an impressive haul of silverware: 3 ACB titles, 5 Copa del Rey trophies, 5 Spanish Supercups, and the coveted EuroLeague title on two occasions.

However, Rodriguez's trophy cabinet extends beyond the confines of Real Madrid. He scaled the summit of European basketball with CSKA Moscow in the 2018-19 season, adding another EuroLeague championship to his collection. He also carved out a successful three-year spell in Italy with Milan.

Rodriguez's career wasn't limited to European shores. He chased his NBA dream, suiting up for the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and New York Knicks between 2003 and 2010. He even made a brief return to the league in the 2016-17 season with the Philadelphia 76ers.

On the international stage, Rodriguez was a mainstay for the Spanish national team. He played a pivotal role in their triumphs at the 2006 World Cup and EuroBasket 2015. He also added a collection of impressive individual accolades, including silver medals at EuroBasket 2007 and the 2012 London Olympics, alongside bronze medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, EuroBasket 2013, and EuroBasket 2017.

Rodriguez's impact transcended statistics. He was known for his tenacious defense, pinpoint passing, and clutch performances in high-pressure situations. A true leader on and off the court, he earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents alike.

While his playing days are over, Rodriguez's basketball journey is far from finished. His experience, leadership, and basketball IQ make him a valuable asset for any organization. It's likely we'll see him remain involved in the sport, whether as a coach, executive, or mentor for aspiring young players.

Sergio Rodriguez leaves behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and unwavering passion for the game. He'll be remembered as one of the greatest Spanish point guards of all time, and his influence on the sport will undoubtedly continue for years to come.
