Champions League: Jude Bellingham's late strike seals Real Madrid's win vs Union Berlin

Real Madrid claimed a 1-0 win over Union Berlin at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, as Jude Bellingham scored a vital goal in the 94th minute of their Group C opener.

This victory spoiled Union Berlin's debut in the Champions League.

The match was tied until Federico Valverde's shot deflected off two Union players in the box, allowing Bellingham to score its sixth goal in as many matches this season.

This late goal not only secured the victory but also maintained Real Madrid's perfect record this season, marking their sixth straight victory.

Bellingham, who joined Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for 103 million euros in June, expressed  delight at his successful debut, saying: "I'm a confident boy, but I can't really doubted things would start out so well  in terms of terms.” of goals."

He also thanked his team for integrating him  into the group seamlessly. In the first half, Real Madrid dominated possession but struggled to penetrate Union's resolute defence, led by veteran Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci, recently signed by Juventus. Real's Joselu had two header opportunities but could not convert.

The second half saw Real Madrid launch a spirited attacking effort, as Rodrygo nearly scored twice, first from a shot saved by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, then deflected wide with a powerful volley.

As the match progressed, Union Berlin began to lose steam and Real Madrid continued to advance. Substitute players Valverde and Toni Kroos were brought on by coach Carlo Ancelotti to strengthen the midfield.  Despite late chances for Joselu, Antonio Rudiger and Rodrygo, it looked like Union Berlin could snatch a surprising result. However, Bellingham's goal on his Champions League debut for Real Madrid broke their resistance.

Although Union Berlin may have been disappointed to concede a late goal, their performance gave hope for their Champions League campaign as they aim to progress past the group stage.

Union Berlin will host  Braga of Portugal on October 3, while Real Madrid will visit Italian champions Naples.
