India on Sunday inflicted a humiliating six-wicket defeat on five-time champions Australia in their opening match of the ICC Men's World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The home side perhaps expected their match to go smoothly after their heavy attack bowled the five-time champions for 199 with three deliveries remaining in Australia's innings. .
However, India got off to a shocking start in response with three of their top four batsmen falling for ducks - a first in an ODI - in two overs.
Dismissed by Mitchell Marsh for 12 off Josh Hazlewood, Kohli went on to score 85 as he staged another successful run chase for India.
His partner in the 165-run fourth stand, KL Rahul, produced an unlucky knock of 97 as India reached the target in 41.2 overs. Australia were said to be particularly unhappy with their batting as no one reached 50 in the low-scoring match, although David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) started well.
